Gail Hawks was born in Illinois and quickly relocated to California to grow up there. Keeping true to the old time Native American traditions is solely reflected in Gail's artwork. It is her love and respect of all things that influences Gail's artwork which is both prolific and varied.
Gail's beading and leather work on regalia and artifacts, such as bows, pipes, spears, rattles and fans, are museum quality. Gail's intricate petroglyph carving on the bones that adorn her breast-plates, medicine bags and traditional Native American beaded necklaces and earrings, have been on display in fine galleries and museums from New York to L. A. to Alaska. Gail is now doing repairs on artifacts.
Although John and Gail have created artifacts for many movies over the years such as Dances with Wolves, they believe it was just a means to an end. "Never once did I see myself better than the people I met on the street," says John Hawks.
